Convert annual salary to an hourly equivalent
Enter annual gross salary, typical paid hours per week, and paid weeks per year. The hourly equivalent divides salary by total annual paid hours.
Weekly and monthly figures are averages. They do not describe a specific payroll schedule and do not include deductions. Keep salary and paid weeks consistent with each other: both should describe the same period, or the hourly equivalent will be wrong.
Compare total compensation carefully
Hourly rate alone can miss bonuses, overtime eligibility, paid leave, health insurance, retirement contributions, scheduling, and job expenses. Use the result as one input to a broader compensation comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How is the equivalent hourly rate calculated?
Annual salary is divided by hours per week multiplied by paid weeks per year. The result is a gross-pay comparison, not a payroll calculation.
Should unpaid vacation reduce weeks per year?
Yes, but reduce the salary to match. The two fields must describe the same period, so if unpaid leave lowers what you actually receive, lower both the salary and the weeks. Reducing only the weeks divides a full salary over fewer weeks and overstates the hourly rate. Paid vacation generally stays included in both, because salary continues during that time.
Does the calculator include taxes or benefits?
No. It compares gross salary only and does not value taxes, bonuses, overtime, insurance, retirement contributions, leave, or other benefits.
Why is monthly pay annual salary divided by twelve?
The monthly figure is an average across twelve months, not a paycheck amount. Actual paychecks depend on whether payroll is weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly. Biweekly payroll issues twenty-six payments a year rather than twenty-four, so each one is smaller than salary divided by twenty-four and two months a year carry three of them.
